NORDBY, GENESEE PIONERR(SIC), DIED FROM FALL (1928) M. H. Nordby, one of the best known pioneers of the Genesee section, passed away at the Gritman hospital, Moscow, Tuesday morning, August 7, at 6:45 a.m. as the result of a fall sustained at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lilly Larson, Friday evening of last week. Mr. and Mrs. Nordby, who had made their home at Clarkston for the past several years, had come to the home of their daughter about a month ago on account of the ill health of Mrs. Nordby, who is at this time in very poor health. Mr. Nordby was in the hayloft, where hay was being mowed away, and accidentally slipped and fell through the hay chute to the lower floor, receiving internal injuries which resulted in his death. Martin Hansen Nordby was born in Urskogen, Norway, February 18, 1858. He came to the United States in December, 1879, and settled at Soldier, Iowa, and where on December 27, 1882, he was united in marriage with Julia Bertha Severson. They resided at Soldier until 1900, when they came west, settling on a farm 6 ˝ miles east of Palouse, in Latah county. They resided there until 1902, when they came to the Genesee section, where Mr. Nordby purchased the farm home about a mile north of Genesee. They resided there until 1916, when with his wife he retired from active farm life and removed to Clarkston, Wash., where they had since made their home. Mr. Nordby had always lead(sic) an active life although he was of a retiring disposition. He was a consistent member of the Lutheran church and had always taken an active part in that organization. He was known and beloved by almost everyone in this section of the county. Mr. Nordby was the father of three sons and one daughter who, with his faithful wife, survive. They are Oscar H. Nordby, Rudolph E. Nordby and Mrs. Lilly Larson of Genesee and Julius E. Nordby of Moscow. Two brothers and one sister also survive; Mrs. Ostlid, who resides in Norway, H. H. Nordby, Palouse, Wash., and C. H. Nordby, Soldier, Iowa. Funeral services were held from the Genesee Valley Lutheran church Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, with Rev. E. M. Hegge, pastor of the church, in charge, assisted by Rev. Bodine of Clarkston, Wash. The pallbearers were B. P. Luvaas and P. P. Dahl of Moscow, Mr. Rognstad and Mr. Uglen of Clarkston, Ole Iverson and Henry Hanson of Genesee. Many old-time friends were in attendance at the funeral and the floral offerings were profuse.
