Olson (From the collection of Vivian Norby Andersen) Martin B. Olson, son of Christian and Julia Olson, was born December 10, 1890 in Willow Township. He lived in the Soldier community throughout his lifetime with the exception of his years in military service and his last months spent at the Elmwood nursing home in Onawa. He was baptized January 21, 1891 and confirmed May 27, 1906. He was an active and faithful member of Soldier Lutheran Church throughout his lifetime. He also served a number of years on the Soldier schoolboard(sic). He served with the U. S. Army during World War I and was a member of the American Legion Post 462 of Soldier. In 1965 Mr. Olson received a certificate in recognition of 45 of continuous membership in the American Legion. He marries Josephine Thoreson March 24, 1925 at Sioux City. She passed away several years ago. He passed away Saturday morning, June 11, 1966 at Elmwood home in Onawa at the age of 75 years, 6 months and one day. He is survived by two sons, Loren E. of Soldier and Dr. Ivan R. of Sacramento, California; four grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Ella Graham of Los Angeles, Calif., besides a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, 1966 at the Soldier Lutheran country church with Pastor Harry C. Sorensen officiating. Mrs. Bernard Berens sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Abide With Me”. Mrs. Charles Dommer Jr. was organist. Interment was in Soldier Valley cemetery under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home of Soldier. The Soldier Legion Post had charge of military honors. Bearers were Glen Thoreson, Kleon Ballantyne, Virgil M. Olson, Bernard Thoreson, Chester Olson and Robert Thoreson.
