She was the widow of Harold Pike, prominent Whiting farmer who died in 1957, just a year after the couple had celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary. Mrs. Pike was a charter member of the Whiting Women’s Study Club and held numerous district and state offices. In 1954 she was named honorary vice- president of the Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs, and had served only recently as president of her local American Legion Auxiliary. She was a lifelong member of the Whiting Congregational Church. In 1954 she was named Monona County Rural Homemaker of the year. Long active in school affairs, Mrs. Pike was the first woman to serve on the Whiting School board, and later served 14 years on the Monona County Board of Education. In 1954 she was a delegate to the White House Conference on Education. The daughter of a pioneer merchant, Lyman Whittier, she is survived by a sister, Mrs. Florence Howard of Wharton, Texas; a son, Herbert of Whiting and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held last Thursday in the Whiting Congregational Church with the Reverend Donald Gall officiating. Burial was in the Whiting Cemetery under the direction of the Wood Funeral Home. Gilbert Smith sang “How Great Thou Art” with Mrs. Jane Matthews at the organ and Mrs. Florence Garred at the piano. Pallbearers were Ted Carlson, Louis Erixon, Clarence Johnson, Milford Nelson, Dean Niffenegger and Ardel Persinger.
