Shol was born June 10, 1876 at Oslo, Norway. He came to America when a young man of 19. His father passed away when he was 11 years old. He was an only child. His mother passed away a number of years later. Andrew was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Norway and was a member of the Lutheran church at Soldier during his lifetime here. He was united in marriage to Annie Skow on September 15, 1897 at Soldier, Iowa. She preceded him in death on February 23, 1952. A daughter, Alice, Mrs. Bill Nestell passed away in California at the age of 46 years. Mr. Shol had been a farmer all of his life until he retired in 1943 when he moved to Soldier to make his home. He had been in failing health for some time and passed away at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa on Wednesday, July 21, 1965 at the age of 89 years, one month and 11 days. Survivors include his four daughters, (Frances) Mrs. Burdette Mess of Minneapolis, Minn., (Lola) Mrs. Paul Hillburg of Bishop, Calif., (Doris) Mrs. George Burson and (Beatrice) Mrs. Harry Dick, both of Soldier; two sons, Leslie H. of Whittier, Calif. and Elmer of Moorhead, Iowa; also 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild and a number of other relatives and friends. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 23 at the Lutheran church in Soldier with Pastor Harold Koehler officiating. Mrs. Norman C. Hanson sang “In The Garden” and “The Old Rugged Cross”, accompanied at the organ by Miss Margaret Evenson. Interment was in Soldier Valley Cemetery under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home of Soldier. Casket bearers were Michael Saunders, Larry Burson, Arles and Murlyn Dick, Ronald Shol and Harold Shol.
