Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Castana Community Church, with the Rev. Robert W. Fritzmeier officiating. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery, Moorhead, Iowa. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa. Mrs. Smith was born May 27, 1910, in rural Moorhead, the daughter of Emery and Ella (Thoreson) Ballantyne. She attended school in Canton, S.D., Thoreson Country School and Moorhead High School. On Sept. 26, 1929, she married H.R. "Dick" Smith in Sioux City. The couple farmed in Moorhead, Bemidji, Minn., and Pine City, Minn., for nine years. They moved to a farm near Moorhead in 1943, and to a farm near Castana in 1953, where they farmed until retiring in 1982. Mr. Smith died Jan. 27, 1987, in Sioux City. She was confirmed and baptized at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa, and was affiliated with Castana Community Church. She was a member of the Neighborly Pals Birthday Club in Castana. Survivors include three grandsons, Rodney Collett of Clearwater, Fla., Bradley Collett of Brookings, S.D., and Troy Oberembt of Sioux Falls, S.D.; four great- grandchildren, Becky, Rick and Jesse Boyd and Callie Rose Oberembt; and a great-great-grandchild, Jordan Anfinson. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Harold Smith Jr. and Dawaine Smith; a daughter, Mabel Marie Collett; two brothers, John and Cleon "Bus" Ballantyne; a sister at birth; and a granddaughter, Debra Oberembt.
