He came with his parents in early childhood to Monona County in a covered wagon and lived for a short time on what is known as the Morton farm just south of Onawa. He received his schooling in the schools of Monona county. At the age of eighteen he worked with his brother Elmus who then operated a barber shop at Ute, Iowa and there he learned the trade that he followed a greater share of his life. His brother Elmus was elected to serve as the Sheriff of Monona county and Frank came to the county seat and worked with his brother in the sheriff’s office. It was during this time that he learned to know the work of law enforcement and desired to continue in that work doing his bit as a good citizen in the county. Her served again as a deputy in charge of the east side of the county under Sheriff Henry Harlow. In 1906 he moved to Soldier, Iowa and worked there in the barber shop for Mr. L. K. Boe. On August 19, 1908 he was united in marriage to Minnie Hedum. To this union was born one son, Warren. In the fall of 1929, thru Adult Confirmation and Holy Baptism, he became a member of the Soldier Valley Lutheran Church, Soldier, Iowa. He retained this membership up to the time of his death. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Moorhead, Iowa. During the years he lived in Soldier, Iowa Mr. Strain served in various capacities in the community life in that village, serving as constable, as a councilman, and served as Mayor at the time he received the appointment as Deputy Sheriff under the present administration. He and his wife moved to Onawa, Iowa, January 1, 1939, when he took up his duties under Sheriff Melvin S. Peterson. Frank Strain was known and loved by both young and old throughout the entire county. He was known and loved by all who learned to know his principles and his policy of dealing fairly with all. In observing Mr. Strain while carrying out the official duties as a deputy sheriff it was evident that all who came under his jurisdiction were treated with the utmost courtesy and kindness. In serving the citizenry of this county, Mr. Strain served well; was just in the performance of his dealings and fearless in the performance of his duties. We in Monona county have lost a faithful public servant. One who was always on duty, one who loved to serve and one who always had a kind word of greeting to those he met. On Saturday afternoon, October 12, together with Mr. Fred Dunbar, Mr. Strain drove to Galva, Iowa in the performance of his official duties. While in Galva he became ill. Medical attention was given him there and he was brought back to the Onawa hospital. He received all the medical aid that was possible, but the Lord God saw fit to take him from this vale of sorrows to Himself in heaven, and on Tuesday, October 15, 1940 (the day he was to celebrate his birthday) his Maker called him to His Heavenly Home, dying from a cerrabral(sic) hemorage(sic). He is survived by his wife and his son, Warren; three sisters: Miss Nellie Strain of Hollywood, Calif., Mrs. Josephine Wax of Glendive, Montana and Mrs. Elsie Watts of Los Angeles, Calif.; and by four brothers: M. K. Strain of Anerely, Sask., Canada, Isaiah Strain of Oto, Iowa, Bert Strain of Glenn Sprey, N. Y. and Charles Strain of Hollywood, California. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Those who mourn have our sincere sympathy and the sympathy of the citizens of Monona county. May the God of all grace be with them in their great sorrow, strengthen and comfort them. Funeral services were held on Friday, October 18, 1940 at the First Congregational Church in Onawa, with Rev. O. G. Salveson, pastor of the Trinity English Lutheran Church of Onawa and Rev. E. E. Hoff, pastor of the Soldier Valley Lutheran Church, Soldier, in charge. Miss Irene Johnson on the Onawa school faculty played the pipe organ during the service. Mrs. O. G. Salveson sang “Come Ye Disconsolate” and a quartet from Soldier, consisting of Miss Alice Wingate, Mrs. Conrad Rude, Mr. Kenneth Mathison and Mathew Mathison sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Lead Kindly Light.” Two classmates of Warren Strain who is a student at the Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota, spoke for the student body of that school. Mr. Olaf Storaasli, student body president, spoke for the……(rest is missing) File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ia/monona/obits/s/strain2230gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/iafiles/ File size: 5.1 Kb
