She was taken there on Saturday when she became suddenly worse after an illness of six years that had kept her bedfast part of that time. Mrs. Swain was the mother of eight children and her family was her greatest joy. She was always kind and thoughtful of her husband and children, never complaining of her suffering for fear it would put too much of a burden on them. She lived a good Christian life and when able to do so took an active part in church work. Since she became bedfast several months ago the household duties had fallen on her son, Milton who cared for his mother like she would have cared for him. He constantly cared for her wants and needs, did practically all the housework, including the cooking and washing. Funeral services were held from the family home at 1:30 and the Soldier Lutheran church at 2:00 on Wednesday. Rev. Hoff gave the sermon. Burial was in Soldier Valley cemetery in charge of Ralph Oldham. Olga Olson Swain, daughter of Julia and Christian B. Olson, was born in Willow township on the Olson farm February 25, 1896. She was baptized in infancy, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith June 23, 1912. She received her elementary education in the Mathison school. In 1914 she moved with her parents to Soldier to the home now occupied by the Swain family. Besides helping with home duties, Mrs. Swain was assistant postmistress two years. On the 18th of March, 1922 she was united in marriage to Norval swain. This union was blessed with eight children—five boys and three girls. They lived on the farm till the spring of 1944 when Mr. Swain purchased the Co-operative station in Soldier and moved his family to Soldier to live with Mrs. Swain’s mother, Mrs. Julia R. Olson, who passed away August 3, 1945. Mrs. Swain was very ill about six years ago and had a serious operation. Since that time she has been in poor health, but God has been good to spare her to her family this long. She attended the Good Friday Communion service and the Easter service at the church but has been bedfast most of the time since then. She was a patient sufferer, never complaining of anything. She thought about her loved ones and their needs. She was thankful for the many kindnesses shown, especially to the ladies who prepared the children’s clothes for school and did some canning for her. Also she often spoke of Milton, how thoughtful he was of her. He is to be commended for his unceasing care of his mother. Mrs. Swain was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christian B. Olson, and four sisters: an infant sister, Mabel; Jennie (Mrs. George Faltinson); Mabel, (Mrs. Earl Knutson; Tilla, (Mrs. John Thoreson.) Surviving to mourn her departure are her husband, Norval Swain, eight children, Willard of Dawson, Minn.; Norma Jean of San Francisco; Myron, Cleon, Milton, Carma, Ronald and Colleen at home, and three grandchildren; also two sisters: Selma (Mrs. V. J. Ayres of Salinas, Calif.; Ella (Mrs. B. H. Graham) of Los Angeles; five brothers: Olius of Dow City, Silas, Martin, Milo and Edd of Soldier. She also leaves a host of other relatives and friends who mourn her passing. On Saturday afternoon, September 21 she took a turn for the worse and was taken to the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City. She passed away Sunday morning, September 22, 1946 at 4:30 at the age of 50 years, 6 months and 27 days. A favorite song she often sang could well be her benediction to her husband, to her family, sisters and brothers, relatives and friends: God be with you till we meet again By His counsel’s guide uphold you With His sheep securely fold you God be with you till we meet again.
