Swenson FC 2000 Swen K. Swenson, age 80, of rural Varina, formerly of Storm Lake died Thursday, January 27, 2000 at the Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake following a brief illness. A memorial fund has been established at St. Mark Lutheran Church. Swen Karl Swenson was born December 3, 1919 in Soldier, Iowa the son of Swen A. and Olena (Peterson) Swenson. He attended school in Soldier. Swen served in the United States Army during World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart with two clusters. On July 10, 1943 he married Valborg Johanna Haugen in Soldier, Iowa. The couple moved to Storm Lake in January of 1958. Swen worked as a mechanic for over 40 years at John Deere Implement dealerships in Moorhead, Storm Lake and Newell. He then went to work in the Storm Lake School system as a custodian retiring in 1981. He and Vallie began a yard, odd jobs and snow removal business retiring again in 1993. At this time they moved to rural Varina. Swen was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, Storm Lake, D. W. Steiner American Legion Post #588, and the Storm Lake Horseshoe Club. He enjoyed card playing, fishing, gardening and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He is survived by his wife, Vallie, two sons; Swen Jr., Des Moines and Richard and his wife, Lucy, Des Moines; five daughters: Sandy Wagener and her husband, Renny, Ankeny, Lenora Libolt and her husband, Bob, Storm Lake, Sallie Leibhart and her husband, Duane, Adel, Ila Chapman and her husband, Richard, Aurora, Nebraska, Connie Demers and her husband, John, Storm Lake; a son-in- law Vernon Banks, Ankeny; 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother Clifford Swenson, Moorhead and a sister Lillian Price and her husband, Art, Council Bluffs and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Virginia Banks, a granddaughter, Penny Swenson, two brother, Andy and Harold and by a sister Gladys Husted.
