He made his home on a farm south of Soldier until 1944 when he moved to Onawa. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa and at 1:00 p.m. at Soldier Lutheran Church with Pastor Harry Sorensen officiating. Mrs. Olive Kelley was the chapel organist. Mrs. Norman C. Hanson sang “Jesus Savior Pilot Me” and “Jesus Lover of My Soul”, accompanied by Mrs. Harry Andersen at Soldier Lutheran Church. Interment was in Soldier Valley Cemetery under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home. Casket bearers were Oscar Larson, Elvin Heistand, Earl Chambers, Chris Steen, Orren Rude and Ivan Gibbs. Carl Swenson, son of George and Jane Swenson, was born on November 26, 1878 at Soldier, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. He studied telegraphy in college at Denison, Iowa and was depot agent in several towns in Iowa. On August 31, 1904 he was united in marriage to Nannie Clemon by Rev. Bakken at the South church near Soldier. This was the first marriage performed in this church. In 1909 he left Irwin, Iowa and resided on a farm south of Soldier until the spring of 1944 when he moved to an acreage south of Onawa. Later they moved to the present home in Onawa. Left to mourn his passing as eight daughters: Elma Maule and Ella Glass of Sac City, Iowa; Edna Mesenbrink of Onawa; Gladys Nelson of Mapleton, Evelyn Maberry of Indio, California, Carol Flint of Buena Vista, Colorado, Sylvia Reich and Norma Olson of Sioux City; twenty grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ella Lehmberg of Turin and Josie Sexton of Soldier. Preceding him in death were his wife, Nannie and son, Clifford. Mr. Swenson was a loving father and was a faithful member of his church.
