GUNDA KAATZ (From the collection of Vivian Norby Andersen) Mrs. Gunda C. Kaatz was born April 18, 1890 on a farm near Soldier, Iowa, and passed from this life at her home in Soldier on Wednesday March 30, 1960 at the age of 69 years. Death came suddenly as the result of a heart attack. Her sudden passing came as a shock to her many friends and relatives. She was baptized and confirmed in the Soldier Lutheran Church where she was a faithful member throughout her lifetime. In 1907 she was united in marriage to Martin Ulven and to this union four children were born. One daughter passed away in infancy. Mr. Ulven died in 1924. In October of 1926 she was united in marriage to Carl Kaatz with whom she spent a full and happy life. Mrs. Kaatz was a member of the Soldier Ladies Aid and was awarded a lifetime membership pin. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for which she was awarded a 25 year service pin. Left to mourn her passing besides her husband are three children, Carl Ulven of Mapleton; Mrs. Lyle (Mabel) Welch of Audubon, and Mrs. Ival (Elaine) Outhouse of Moorhead. Also a niece Mrs. Frank (Arla) Wilson whom she raised from childhood; one sister, Mrs. Glen Johnson of Chicago, Ill.; three brothers, Alex of Dallas. Texas, Tingval of Soldier and Alfred of Carroll; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 1 at the Soldier Lutheran Church. Pastor Maynard Moen conducted the services. Mrs. Norman Hanson and Mrs. Bryce Lee sang “In the Garden” and “Beyond the Sunset”, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Harry Andersen. The casket bearers were Charles Dommer Sr., Wilmer Knutson, Bernard Thoreson, Olius M. Olson, Hilman Olson and Bryce Lee. Interment was in the Soldier Valley cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home of Soldier.
