Obituary - Lovilia Press April 2, 1908 JANE FINDLEY HENDERSON Jane Findley was born in Blount Co., TN, September 21, 1821, died March 28, 1908, age 86 years, 6 months and 7 days. She moved with her parents to Putnam Co., IN in 1830. In 1840 she was married to Robert Henderson and with him moved to Missouri about 1844. In 1845 they moved to Iowa and settled on a farm in Union Township where she lived for 62 years. To this union were born nine children, of whom four are still living, Mrs. Mary Stewart, James, Will and Joe Henderson. For 22 years she has made her home with Joe and family who patiently and tenderly cared for her during this time. She was one that knew what sorrow was, having trod this earth without her companion. The first death came to the family in December 4, 1873 when Ella was called away, and two months later John and in August 1876 her companion, two months later Elizia was called, in Feb. 1878 Mrs. John Knight and three months later Jane. In less than five years six had left this world for the world beyond. But when the last daughter was taken out of the home, only those with her daily knew with what fortitude she bore it. On her sad sweet face was written, "I must not meumeu, God knows best, He has left me something yet to love". She had one married daughter and three sons whom she cared for with a mother love. At the death of the daughter, Mrs. John Knight, Ollie (now Mrs. Will Byerley) came to live with her and gave her motherly care where she remained until her marriage. Her only daughter and three sons living near her were at her bedside during her last illness until the summons came that called her home. Altho not a member of any church we have reason to believe from the life she lived while here that she was a christian and from the testimony she gave to a friend a few months ago that she felt prepared to meet her God and was ready and willing to go whenever she was called. She leaves to mourn her departure 4 children, 24 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, one brother and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Union M.E. Church, Sunday, March 29, at 11 o'clock a.m. conducted by Rev. B.G. Hankins. Interment in the Union Cemetery. (Written by a member of the family.) Obituary - Charles Willard Findley (from Rev. Clifford Spurlock, South Dakota) Charles Willard Findley was born near Albia, IA January 23, 1895, and departed this life March 18, 1978 at the Veteran's Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. He was the son of the late Sheldon and Maggie Bryson Findley. All of his brothers and his only sister, namely Willis, Clarence, Frank, Roy and Nellie, preceded him in death. His age was 83 years, 1 month and 23 days. Early in his life his family moved to Mellette Co., SD, where he spent most of his life except during his time of service with the United States Army during World War I. At the time he entered the Army he was at White River, SD. His Army serial number was 3127694, and he was attached to Army Demolition Group of Company B, 128th Infantry. Following the war he was honorably discharged at Camp Dodge, IA, June 6, 1919. At an early age Charlie professed faith in Christ and united with the Baptist Church. It was located in Mellette or in an adjacent county but we do not know the name of the local church. Since coming to Marion several years ago he attended the Missionary Church of Marion when physically able. He had many friends and will be sadly missed. For several years he had been a resident of Tieszen Memorial Home. During the closing months of his earthly life his spiritual perception became much brighter and his devotion to God became much deeper, for which we are profoundly grateful. Charlie would not have us tell you that he had no faults. He did. But this beautiful flag that drapes the coffin is not just a pleasant decoration. It stands for much more - Belleau Wood, the Meuse-Argonne, the Battle of Dead Man's Hill, the terrible mustard gas, the great concussions, the emotional strain. But only the day before his almost instant passing, while visiting in his room, he asked, even before I mentioned it, that we read and pray as our custom was. We believe he answered the final bugle call in peace. "Men space their years by the sun, and reckon their months by the moon, Which never arrive too late and never depart too soon. Let us set our clocks by God's, and order our lives by His ways, And nothing can come and nothing can go Too soon or too late in our day." Service was conducted in the chapel of Tschetter Funeral Home, Marion, SD.
