Coyner was born in Jessamine county, Kentucky, on the 15th of May 1818. He was the eldest of a family of six children and when 13 years of age removed with his parents to Marion county, Indiana. He had received a limited education in the common schools of Kentucky and on removing to Ohio secured a clerkship in a general store, which position he held until 1839, when he went into business for himself. His health failing in 1844, he sold out and removed to Lawrence county, Ind., where he bought a farm and cultivated it. In 1852 he again sold and came west, settling in Linn county, Iowa. Here he farmed until 1866, when he removed to Muscatine county, where he pruchased 200 acres of land and settled permanently. July 2, 1840, Mr. Coyner was united in marriage with Ingray J. Hollenbeck in Putnam county, Indiana. Six children were to them, only one of whem, Alice, survives. For forty-six years Mr. and Mrs. Coyner were members of the Baptist church, but in recent years united with the Christian church in Nichols. Mr. Coyner was in early life a Whig and voted for W.H. Harrison for President; in after years he affiliated with the Republican pary, of which he was an earnest advocate. He had held various official positions and was numbered among the prominent citizens of Pike township. The funeral services were held Nov. 4th and were largely attended by the many friends of the family. Additional Comments: I am a great-great-great grandson of Martin Luther Coyner.
