Dietrich, in Nichols, Friday, November 13, 1891, at 6:50 a.m., Joseph Shannon, aged 71 years, 9 months, and 3 days. Mr. Shannon was in his usual heath Tuesday and had attended the funeral of his daughter-in-law the day before. Wednesday morning he complained of feeling unwell and did not leave his bed. At about 3 o'clock in the afternoon he had a stroke of apoplexy, and after intense suffering he passed to rest yesterday morning. Mr. Shannon was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him and his death is a loss to Pike township as well as to his family. Six children, four daughters and two sons, survive him. they are: Mrs. D.M. Landis and Mrs. F.W. Downs, of Davenport, Mrs. J.S. Smith of Goshen township, Mrs. W.J. Deitrich, of Nichols, and Robert J. and Richard T. of Pike township. Additional Comments: I am a great-great-grandson of Joseph Shannon. Joseph Shannon was born in Ireland on 17 April 1824. He married Jane Evitt after coming to the United States. He applied for citizenship on September 8, 1871, in Muscatine county, Iowa.
