Iowa COMPILED BY Geo. W. Schee and O. H. Montzheimer Published Privately PRIMGHAR, IOWA 1909 PREFACE. The following pages contain the result of several months' labor in an effort to secure biographical data, army service, and record of all survivors of the Civil War who have resided in O'Brien County. The work is not perfect, nor is the list complete. So far as practical and in nearly every case the military data have been secured from official records in the offices of the adjutants general of the several states. Besides this, personal investigation at the National Capital has been made in an effort to complete the work. It has been impossible to trace the record of some of the men; there is no alphabetical list of the soldiers serving in the War. Some states have alphabetical lists of their men; but the lists are useless as it is impossible to determine which of several men of the same name is the one wanted. The misspelling of names on the original muster rolls has made the work more arduous, and we have adopted the spelling selected by the soldier or his relatives. The work has been conscientiously done and every effort has been made to make it not only complete, but accurate as well. We have striven to give every man full credit for all the records show. Mistakes must of course happen, when records over forty years old have been consulted, arid many details depend on the memory of old neighbors and friends. That there are some errors must be expected, but we hope there are none of vital importance. The preparation of the work has required several months' hard labor and the work is such that but little of it could be left to subordinates. We trust that if errors have been made they will be overlooked and forgiven. The names of some soldiers who have resided in the county are omitted from this list, in cases where relatives have failed or refused to furnish information that would lead to the identification of the proper company and regiment. The work of compilation has been largely done by Mr. Montzheimer. Mr. Schee has furnished the funds required to defray the expenses of postage, printing and publication. The committee are under especial obligation to Congressman E. H. Hubbard who has taken an active interest in the work and greatly aided in securing information from the government officials at Washington. By O. H. MONTZHEIMER. SUGGESTIONS FOR ADDITIONAL RECORDS. There are twenty-four blank pages inserted in the back of this book for the purpose of making a record of a more complete history of the soldier, his wife, his children and ancestry. I want such carefully prepared in short concise statements and if room is lacking have the matter typewritten and then put in the book. Very few people in this country leave such history of themselves and those near and dear to them; such history should be left for our posterity. There is a blank form on the next page showing the questions asked to aid in preparing the material. If enough more names and history of Old Soldiers who have at some period lived in O'Brien County, Iowa, and do not appear herein are found they will be printed and sent the owner of each of these books to be pasted in for record. This book is not for sale. GEORGE W. SCHEE.
