Squires Company F First Nebraska Calvary Union Army Rank: Private Birth: April 8, 1841 Lake County, Ohio Death: July 18, 1912 Clarinda, Page Co., Iowa Enlisted: June 15th 1861 as a private in Co F First Regiment Nebraska Volunteer Cavalry. Discharged: October 13, 1865 He was disabled by incised wound of right arm and disease of heart and rectum. The circumstances of his injury are as follows: A severe cut in the right arm just below the joint of the shoulder while at Fort Kearney, Nebraska sometime in February 1864. He was driving team in the quartermasters department and in company with the wagon master went to the post harness shop at Fort Kearney to get some article and the harness maker being under the influence of liquor, without any provocation struck Eugene with a saber cutting his right arm severely. Eugene was taken to the hospital at the fort and remained there six weeks. During that time he developed a severe attack of erysipelas. His request was approved starting at $4.00 a month. He was receiving $15.00 a month at the time of his death. Approval had been given to raise it to $25 a month at the time of his death. There are affidavits in the record from Jasper Squires ( brother), Amos Cunning (brother-in-law), and E. A. Pace postmaster in Clarinda, IA, attesting to the character of Eugene. John Prehm (?) was the wagon master and was present when Eugene was stabbed. His affidavit attests to what happened. Eugene was diagnosed with disease of heart, liver, piles, nervous prostration neuralgia and general debility.
