After an active life in Clarinda since 1920, Mr. Dunn had retired in recent years, and ill during recent months which confined him to his home, and of late to the West Heights Manor and Municipal Hospital. He was born on Jan. 30, 1883 at Westboro, Mo, attending public school at Enterprise No 9 and the Westboro High School. He studied at Amity College at College Springs 1901-1903, moving to Iowa to farm with his mother for three years. In 1905, he moved to Omaha and, after attending business school, found employment there. He was married to Pearl Ann Black in Clarinda on June 12, 1907, and they moved back to Clarinda in February 1910 where Mr. Dunn had purchased the Clarinda Hardware Co. In 1920, he entered the manufacturing business, with special attention to automotive items. Many of these were among the 75 patents which he secured during his career. A recent book published to record some of the outstanding improvements in early automotive history, the author pictured three of his inventions including the gas saver, crankshaft counterbalance and motor support. As senior partner in Parris-Dunn Corp, he shared in the manufacturing of the wind chargers and then the military trainer rifles, and at one time had four factories in Clarinda under operation. The Parris-Dunn Corp received the Army-Navy E award for excellent performance. One of Mr. Dunn's outstanding achievements was the building of the Cruizaire airplane which successfully flew in 1929. Community interests were many for "Bill" during his active years. He joined the Reformed Presbyterian Church at an early age, transferring to Clarinda's RP church and later Trinity United Presbyterian. He served as trustee, elder and Sunday School teacher, assisting with planning of the recent new educational unit. The fair association, chamber of commerce and Kiwanis Club had each named him as their president. He was director of Iowa Manufacturers Association, and was given honorary colonel commission by Iowa Press Columnists. His wife, Pearl, died in 1951, and his son Harold during the next year. He was married to Dorothy Gregg Lee in 1952. He has four children, all of whom are at the home at 309 W. Garfield. Lawrence (Larry) Dunn came Saturday from Wheaton, Ill, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Miller (Margaret) of West Union, the J. Howard Dunn of Oakmont, Pa, and Lloyd Dunn of Lower Burrell, Pa, arrived Sunday. He has 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The family has plans that friends may join to establish memorials for Mr. Dunn with the Trinity United Presbyterian Church or the Cardinal Canteen.
