Mr. Opitz had been hospitalized four weeks preceding his death. He was born on a farm in the Guss vicinity on March 19, 1897. His parents were the late Charles and Minnie Opitz. Mr. Opitz operated the Opitz Motor Company and had been associated with the automobile industry in Clarinda since 1915. He became one of the early automobile business men when he joined with his late brother, John, who died April of 1960 in Omaha, to establish a garage and auto agency. Mr. Opitz had held the Ford Motor Company Franchise in Clarinda since August 1, 1917. The Opitz Garage was first established in the building now occupied by the United Food Store and was moved to larger quarters in the building now occupied by the Herald-Journal. After five years they built their building in 1920 on North 15th Street where the Opitz Motor Company is still serving the Clarinda area. He was married to Louise Enderbrock on September 1, 1926. Mrs. Opitz still survives. Other survivors include his sister, Mrs. Myrtle Opitz Smith of Clarinda, and four nieces: Mrs. Charles Wright of Lincoln, Nebraska, Mrs. Darrel Cory of Red Oak, Iowa, Mrs. Joseph Gavel and Mrs. John Schietzelt both of Clevland, Ohio. Mr. Opitz had always taken an interest in his community. He was a member and trustee of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, member of the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce and was one of the originators and organizers of the Clarinda Industrial Board and the Clarinda Building Corp. , which he had been actively serving until his recent hospitalization. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Clarinda Country Club, American Legion, Iowa Automobile Dealers Association and the National Automobile Dealers Association. Mr. Opitz was a veteran of WW I with overseas duty in Germany, and he was a former city councilman. The Rev. D.C. Davis will officiate services in Clarinda on Tuesday. Interment will be in the Clarinda Cemetery. Memorials were directed to the church. Williams-Foster Mortuary of Clarinda was in charge of arrangements.
