Mr. Whitmore, 69, died at 11:20 Wednesday morning at the Municipal Hospital. He had been confined to his home since moving to Clarinda in April. A native of Coin, he moved to Corning 14 years ago when he became associated with his son Floyd in the Okey-Vernon National Bank as chairman of the board of directors. In December of this year the Whitmores purchased controlling interest in the Page County State Bank, Mr. Whitmore having moved to Clarinda to supervise the work here. He was born Jan. 10, 1894, at Coin, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest E. Whitmore, a pioneer couple who homesteaded in Page County. In 1916 he was married to Miss Faye T Cheshire of Northboro, the couple having met at a 4-H camp. Mr. Whitmore was a member of the first 4-H club in Page County and had always helped to foster the idea that 4-H was born in the county under the leadership of Jessie Field Shambaugh. He had continued his interest in 4-H, helping to establish Burr Oak cabin at the 4-H camp in honor of Mrs. Shambaugh. He was recently made an honorary member of the Iowa 4-H clubs. Last August he was one of five members of the original Corn Club that honored Mrs. Shambaugh with a surprise visit during the Page County Fair. The Corn Club won international honors as the champion corn judges for three years in a row from 1910 through 1912. For two of those years Mr. Whitmore was top individual corn judge in Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore lived at Coin after their marriage until moving to Corning in 1949. During that time he was quite active in farming and grain businesses. The Whitmores have always keep their ties with Coin, three of their sons -- Lloyd, Wayne and Keith -- living on the Whitmore farms. Within the past 10 years they have built two new homes west of town. Last summer the new Methodist parsonage at Coin was dedicated, having been a gift to the church from Mr. Whitmore and his wife. They have also promoted the building of the new church which is under construction now. Besides his wife and three sons at Coin and one at Corning, Mr. Whitmore is survived by a son, Dr. William Whitmore of Iowa City, two brothers, Mayne of Coin and Vern of Yorktown, and 11 grandchildren. The family has requested that memorials be established in a memorial fund at the Coin Methodist Church. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/iafiles/ File size: 3.1 Kb
