Des Moines Tribune Thur Jun 28, 1928 pg 1 G. A. R. TO BURY W. H. H. GARRITT Rites for Civil War Veteran at 2 P.M. Friday The G. A. R. ritual will be read at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral of W. H. H. Garritt, who died suddenly Wednesday at his hom, 213 Edison avenue. Crocker post of which Mr. Garritt was a member will have charge of the services, which will not be military. Mr. Garritt was born in St. Louis, M., March 21, 1845. He served in the civil war, three years in the First California infantry of Sacramento, and one year in the Fift-fifth Kentucky infantry. For forty-six years Mr. Garritt was a resident of Des Moines. In the early nineties he was assistant chief of police. He was later appointed by the United States government as superintendent of several national cemeteries. In 1920 he was retired and since then has lived in Des Moines.
