H. Murphy, died at the Mercy Hospital, Des Moines, Sunday, April 14, from a three week’s illness from pneumonia. He was converted and received into the Catholic Church Thursday, April 5, and died fortified by all the rites of the church. William Murphy was born at Knoxville, Iowa, February 2, 1902, and died at Des Moines, Iowa, April 14, 1918. The remains were shipped to Melrose Tuesday and interment was made with his mother in the cemetery north of town. Relatives who accompanied the remains were his father, T. H. Murphy; and sister, Mrs. Robert Wahl, and husband, of Melrose; his brothers, Emmett Murphy, of Dallas, Iowa, and Paul Murphy, of Knoxville, Iowa; his sister, Mrs. Charles Stillwell and husband of Buxton, his aunt, Mrs. Bettie Wren, of Knoxville; and cousin, Miss Clara Brown of Donnelly, Iowa." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALLIE MERLE BALCH MURPHY Born -- September 12, 1901 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa Died -- May 22, 1978 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa DES MOINES REGISTER, Unknown Date "Mrs. Allie M. Murphy, 76, of 1208 E. Twenty-seventh Court died Monday of complications following a broken hip at Northwest Community Hospital. She had been ill six weeks. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Wesleyan Church, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. A lifelong resident of Des Moines, Mrs. Murphy was a retired telephone operator and member of the Grace Wesleyan Church and Telephone Pioneers. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Carol Zeiger of Des Moines; a son, Patrick H. of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Hamilton’s funeral Home is in charge of service arrangements." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MARTHA LOUISA JORDAN GREEN BALCH Born -- September 25, 1859 in Norris City, White County, Illinois Died -- January 22, 1937 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa DES MOINES REGISTER, Unknown Date "Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Louisa Balch, 77, of 1233 Twenty-seventh St., who died Friday, will be 2 p.m. today at Simpson Methodist Church, E. Twenty-sixth St. and Capital Ave. Mrs. Balch had been a resident of Des Moines since 1900. Her death was caused by a tumor. She had been ill one year. Shortly before her death, Mrs. Balch had planned her funeral, and asked that her six sons serve as pallbearers. Her request will be carried out. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Lula Plantz, Eldorado, Kan.; Mrs. H. C. Murphy, Des Moines; the sons, William of Mingo, Ia.; and Orris, Roscoe, Othel, Zell and James, all of Des Moines, and a brother, C. R. Jordan, Norris City, Ill." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HERSCHEL LUCAS GREEN Born -- March 3, 1889 (Maybe Arkansas) Died -- 1935 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa DES MOINES REGISTER, Unknown Date "GREEN’S RITES TO BE MONDAY, Former Officer Died of Pneumonia. Services for Herschel Green, 46, of 1223 Hanley st., former city policeman, will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic church, E. Thirty-third st. and Easton blvd., at 9 a.m. Monday. Mr. Green died Friday at Broadlawns General hospital of double pneumonia. He was a policeman from 1919 to 1920, and, after some time as a merchant policeman in west Des Moines, for 12 years was a railroad detective for the Rock Island railroad, with headquarters in Omaha, Neb. His mother, Mrs. Martha Balch, Des Moines; his wife, Mrs. Nellie Green, from whom he was separated, and two children, James and Ellen, survive. Also surviving are seven brothers, Oris, Roscoe, Zell, Odie and Othel Green of Des Moines; William Green of Mingo, Ia., and Sherman Green of Wheeling, Ark.; and three sisters, Mrs. Allie Murphy of Des Moines; Mrs. Lula Plantz of Eldorado, Kan., and Mrs. Belle Ballard of Wheeling, Ark." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NELLIE M. Green, 79, of 3424 Grand ave., who died at Northwest Hospital Friday after a heart attack, will be at noon Monday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill. Mrs. Green, a lifelong Des Moines resident, was a member of Simpson Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Gaskell, two sons, Dr. Don C. and William M. and a sister, Mrs. Ada Butlin, all of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren and a great-grandchild." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JACK LEROY GREEN Born -- Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa Died -- 1930s in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa DES MOINES REGISTER, Unknown Date "GREEN RITES TO BE MONDAY, East High Gridders to Attend Services. Services for Jack LeRoy Green, 14, of 1223 Hanley st., a sophomore at East High school, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home with burial at Laurel Hill cemetery. Members of the East High school football team will march to the funeral home for the services in a body. Jack was a member of the second team. Pallbearers will be schoolmates. Jack died Friday at Mercy hospital of blood poisoning. Relatives said he suffered a left knee injury last July when he fell while running and that it was aggravated when he insured the knee again last Sunday while playing at the state fairgrounds.
