WRIGHT Capt. Melville C. Wright of Des Moines, died of lung fever, November 4, 1868, at Bryan City, Wyoming Territory. Bryan City is on the Union Pacific Railroad. Many od our readers are aware that General Williamson has assumed the duties of Land Agent for the U. P. R. R., and had associated with him in the business, Capt. Wright. It is only a few months since they left our city to enter into the discharge of their duties. At the time of the death of Capt. Wright, Gen. Williamson was at some distance west of Bryan City on the line of the U. P. R. R. on business of the company. John C. Tiernan Esq., formerly of this city, was at Bryan City and assures us that every attention that was possible to give was rendered to Capt. Wright in his last illness. Capt. Wright, at the breaking out of the late rebellion, enlisted at the age of 19, from Delhi, in Delaware County, in Company I, 1st Iowa Infantry. He enlisted April 23rd, 1861 and was mustered into U. S. service, May 11, 1861. After the disbandment of the 1st Iowa Infantry, he, with others, raised the 3d Iowa Battery. He enlisted Aug. 8, 1861, was commissioned as Junior 1st Lt., April 16, 1861, mustered into the United States service, Sept. 23, 1861; was promoted to Senior 1st Lt., Sept. 4, 1862, to Capt. Oct. 4, 1864, and left the service Jan. 5, 1865. At the Battle of Pea Ridge he was wounded in the arm and back. Gen. Vandever, then Col. of the 9th Iowa Infantry, commanded the 2d Brigade, 4th Division. In his report of the battle, after referring to the fact that the 3d Battery, then called the Dubuque battery, under Capt. Hayden, was attached to the 9th Iowa Infantry, Gen. Vandever says: "The Captain, together with Lts. McClure, Wright and Bradley, were especially cool and firm, and every man was prompt and ready in the performance of the most arduous duty." After the war Capt. Wright studied law, and on the graduation of the class of the Iowa Law School, in 1866, distinguished himself with highest honors. He received the degree of Bachelor of Laws and then was admitted to practice in the courts of the state. Capt. Wright was the son of Hon. James Wright, late Secretary of State. Capt. Wright was born in Hendricks County, Indiana, Nov. 1, 1842, and was at the time of his death in the 27th year of his age.
