APPELMAN. – Mr. Appelman was born at Mystic, Connecticut, March 15, 1827; attended school until 13 years of age, when he commenced a sea-faring life and continued it is actively until 1849, serving in every position from cabin boy of a whaler to captain of a merchantman. He has been in nearly every ocean on the globe, and had all the hardy experiences of a sailor's life. He settled at Clermont in 1854, where he has since resided. June 16, 1856, he married Miss Mary J. Thompson, of that place. They have a family of seven children: Mary J., John, William H., Irene P., Genevieve, Ruth and Frances. In 1863 he went to New York, shipped as mate on the Pacific, and went to Bermuda to collect tropical fish for P. T. Barnum's aquarium. Had a very successful trip. Being largely interested in real estate at Clermont, on the completion of the B. C. R. &M. Railroad he opened his large private residence as a hotel, and it is popularly known as the New England House.
