All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************* HUGH BOWEN came from Ohio to Jones County in 1836, and settled at a place which he named "Bowen's Prairie." He was a bachelor, and erected his cabin in the edge of the timber, near where Barrett Whittemore now lives. He took the first census of Jones County in 1839--40, was the first sheriff of said county, and afterwards held the office of assessor. At the beginning of his political career he was a whig, but afterwards became a democrat. He finally went to Colorado, where he died about 1869.
