William Toman, editor and proprietor, is the leading paper of the county, Republican in politics, and one of the influential journals of the state. It has just entered its eleventh year, having been founded in June, 1865, by John L. Loomis. Soon after its establishment it superseded and absorbed the Guardian, then conducted by s. B. Goodnow. Under the management of Mr. Loomis, who besides being a man of high character, was a writer of decided ability, the BULLETIN at once took a prominent and deservedly influential position among the press of Iowa, and grew in prosperity and merit until it was established upon a secure foundation, and was recognized as one of the fixed institutions of the county. In April, 1869, Mr. Loomis disposed of the establishment to its present proprietor. The change in proprietorship wrought no change in the general tone of the Bulletin or descent from the high ground of conscientious principles which it has ever maintained. It is decided, out-spoken, and earnest in its political opinions, without being unduly partisan. It takes strong and advanced grounds on all the reforms of the day, never hesitating from mercenary considerations, to honestly advocate what it deems for the best interests of society, or attack when attack is called for. But it is as the exponent of the interests and material development of the county and city that the Bulletin aims for distinction and achieving its greatest honor and success. It has always been the earnest advocate and supporter of all enterprises calculated to and to the wealth, population and prosperity of Independence, Buchanan County. Its influence in this direction has been beneficial and abundantly successful. It is now in a flourishing condition, being well supplied with new type, material and machinery of the latest and most approved styles and enjoys a large and increasing patronage.
