BUTLER. - This gentleman was born on a farm in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, March 7, 1827. When ten years of age he removed with his parents to Chantauqua County, New York, where he received his early education on the farm, and at the common district school. In 1840 his father removed to Erie, Pennsylvania, where he immediately became a student in the Erie Academy, which he regularly attended for five years and then taught one winter in the city public schools. The summer he was twenty he engaged in mercantile business, carrying on a trafficking trade with dealers in Buffalo, which he continued for about two years, when he sold out and commenced railroading as an employe of the New York and Erie, with which company he remained sixteen years, fourteen of which he lived in New York, and ran a passenger train in and out of that city. The Summers of 1865-6 he spent in Wisconsin improving a farm he had bought a number of years previous in Dodge County, and in the Spring of 1867, removed, with his family, to Cedar Falls, Iowa, and located on a farm two and a half miles south of town, where he remained until 1871, when he bought, and moved onto the property in town where he now resides. In March, 1874, he was elected Mayor of the City of Cedar Falls, to which office he was re-elected in 1873, without opposition.
