CHASE.--The subject of this sketch is one of the early settlers of Mitchell County. He came here in the year 1856, and has since resided at Osage. Mr. Chase was born at Limington, Maine, October 27, 1823. When two years old his father moved to Scarborough, in the same state, where our subject passed his early life, and resided until 1852, when he moved to Portland, and from thence, two years after, to Saco, Maine. From this last place he moved directly to Mitchell County, Iowa, and settled at Osage, where he at present resides. During the war he was deputy Provost Marshal, then appointed postmaster of Osage, which he held eight years. In 1865 was appointed deputy United States Revenue Assessor, and served until that position was abolished by act of Congress. In 1874 he commenced dealing in farm implements and farm machinery supplies at Osage, and still continues. In 1845 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Johnson, of Standish, Maine. Mr. and Mrs. Chase have a family of seven children, five of whom are living: Annie A., Alice M., Emma E., Moses Albert and Edith V.; Moses Herbert and Mary E. died in infancy.
