COLE. -- Mr. Cole has been not only prominent in settling Howard County, in witnessing its first organization, but has been a pioneer through all the once "Far West." He was born at Penn Yan, New York, April 17, 1815. Had the advantages of a common school education. He started for the West in 1833, passed through Chicago when there was not to exceed one hundred population, and located in Naperville, Illinois, in 1837, and remained there until 1853, when he moved to Freeport, Illinois, and the next year to Howard County, Iowa, New Oregon Township, and pre-empted the farm on which he at present lives. For many years he was agent for Walker's line of stages and held the agency until the completion of the Milwaukee & St. Paul R.R. December 31, 1834, was married to Miss Susan Crawford, of Penn Yan, New York. He has a family of seven children.
