Of this class is the subject of this sketch, whose name is repeatedly met with in the annals of Northwood, and North County. His excellent character and useful life afford an example of modest merit well worthy of imitation. Mr DWELLE was born in Greenwich, Washington County, New York, and brought up on a farm, receiving good common school education. Coming west to better his fortune in the Spring of 1857, he located at, and became one of the founders of Northwood, purchasing and planting 80 acres of the present town site the same season, since which time he has been widely identified with the interests of the town of which he is still one of the principle proprietors. In 1860, he purchased, in connection with his brother. A. J. Dwelle, the water power and saw mill adjoinign the town, and immediately erected the flouring mill which they still own and operate. He is quite an extensive land owner and dealer in real estate. Success has crowned his business undertakings, and he is reputed to be liberal with his means toward all deserving objects as he is properous. Although never seeking after public position, has been called much into public life. In 1859, he was chosen county judge, and since 1861, when the functions of that office were transferred to the Board of Supervisors, except two or three years, he has still been and still is a member of that body. He was county surveyor for several years : and in 1866, was elected to the Iowa Legislature, and represented with credit the district comprising North Winnebago, Hancock, and Kossuth Counties. In July 1875, he was chosen one of the first town council of Northwood.
