He was educated at Williams College, Massachusetts, of which institution he was a graduate. For a number of years prior to his removal west, in 1838, he was president of the Cayuga County Medical College. Being a man of wealth, Doctor Fitch's object in coming to Iowa was to invest in real estate, after which it was his intention to have returned to New York. He was, however, induced to change his arrangements and discontinue his profession, by becoming acquainted with Miss Harriet Viele, youngest daughter of Abraham I., and Hannah Douglas Viele, formally of New York, but now residents of Muscatine County, Iowa, to whom he was married, in November, 1839. He subsequently located at Bloomington, now Muscatine, where he continued to reside until his death, which occured August 27, 1847. His wife still survives him, also one daughter, Louise Douglas, who married William H. Farrand, and is now a resident of Rochester, New York. He had two other daughters, both of whom died in infancy. Doctor Fitch was an accomplished gentleman, possessed of a fine, well cultivated intellect, combined with great suavity of manner and swettness of disposition. He was a fond and devoted husband and father, a true friend, and a noble Christian gentleman. His remains are reposing in " Oak Dale Cemetary," Davenport, Iowa.
