HAHN was born in Butler County, Ohio, June 9, 1808, being a descendant of a German family who came to America long before the Revolutionary War, and settled in Pennsylvania. His grandfather was born in Pennsylvania, and emigrating to Bourbon County, Kentucky, at an early day, suffered all the hardships of pioneer life. He subsequently moved to Ohio, to what was called Fort Washington, now Cincinati, and bought land at a place called North Bend on the Big Miami. The Indians were very troublesome, and at one time his family and other settlers were beseiged in the Fort by 600 Indians under command of the "outlaw Girty," but were finally relieved. While out with a Mr. Sellers examining a piece of land they were attacked by several Indians and both killed. Paul Hahn, an uncle , was killed by the savages near the fort in Ohio, while the sufferings endured by this family, and the losses they sustained by the wild men of the forest is beyond the power of words to express. His father, Joseph Hahn, was born in Pennsylvania, moved with the family while he was a boy to Kentucky - thence to Ohio - thence to Indiana and finally to Knox County, Illinois, where he died and is buried. He was married three times, fist to Susannah Seward, a distant relative of Gov. Seward, of New York, her father being one of the earliest settlers of Butler County, Ohio. They had a family of five children, viz.; James, Michael, Stephen, Daniel S., and Mary. Mrs. H. died in Ohio, and afterwards married Dorcas Fields, and by her had Josephus and Julian, both now living, and Paul, who was in the Union army during the Rebellion, and died in Tennessee. His second wife died in Indiana and he was married a third time to Abigail Bloomfield, and by her had Moses and Dorcas. He was in the war of 1812, was surrendered by General Hull, and wounded in the battle of Brownstown. The various families springing from this couple now reside in Iowa and Illinois. The subject of this sketch lived in Ohio till he was about 15 years of age, and then with father and family moved to near Crawfordsville, Indiana and engaged in farming. At the age of twenty one he married Permelia Epperson, of Kentucky, and had the following family : Lemuel, who died aged eight. Susannah, who married Joseph T. West, and had six children, Eugene, Adella, William, Mary, Joseph and Susanna, and died in Linn County, Iowa. Charles E. who married Almira Wolf, by whom he has Florence C., Ambrose, Lulah, Samuel and Minnie. He was in the Union army during the Rebellion, resides in Linn County. Joseph, who marrying Susan Slater, has Daniel, Marvin, Eddie and others. He is Sheriff of Osborn County, Kansas ; Daniel, who married Eliza Tyson, and has Bertie, and Maud living ; he is a farmer and resides at Mt. Vernon. Sarah, married to William Murrey, by whom she has Ernest and other children, resides in California. Mary E. who married James Rose, and had one son, James. He was in the Union army, and died at Helena, Arkansas. Lydia I. married George A. John, a blacksmith, resides at Mt. Vernon, by whom she had Myrtle and William S. Elias E. married Joanna Hahn, and has one child, resides in Kansas. Permelia married Thomas J. Armstrong, and had one son, Lee . He is engaged in a drug store, stone quarry, &c. John F. who married Lizzie Kurtz, of Lisbon, and has one son Frank. He is a farmer and resides in Mt. Vernon. Mr Hahn has one of the best improved farms ( 260 acres ) in Franklin Township, well supplied with timber, water and stone.
