All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************* BENJAMIN RUPERT. – This gentleman, who for nearly forty years has been one of the most honored and highly respected citizens of Dubuque, and for three years past President of the Old Settler's Association, was born May 1, 1805, in the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he received his education and spent the earlier years of his life. He located at Dubuque, Iowa May 15, 1836, where he has since resided, and was in 1839, appointed by Honorable Robert Lucas, the first Governor of the Territory of Iowa, Justice of the Peace for that county, which office he held for about four years. In March, 1852, he was appointed County Clerk by William Y. Lovell to fill an unexpired term, and in the following October was elected to the same office, which position he held by re-election till the 1st of January, 1859. He is now Deputy Surveyor of Customs for Dubuque, which official position he has acceptably filled since March 1, 1871.
