Jacob went with his father and brother, William H. H., to California to look for gold. His brother joined the California 100 in 1862 and died of wounds in 1864. Jacob returned to Iowa after his father's death in 1863 and first served in the 45th Iowa Volunteer Infantry before joining the 15th Iowa Infantry. Jacob married Eliza Jane Perry (b. 1842 and d. 1922 in Iowa) on 24 August 1865 in Iowa. They had five children: William H. H., Carrie Bell, Walter Perry, Charles Elmer and Bertha Isa.
