Mrs. Shepherd is librarian for the Iowa organization of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) bicentennial commission. Mrs. Shepherd, wife of a former state representative has done considerable work in the Iowa census records of 1840 and 1850. Population of Iowa was only 43,116 in 1840 and 192,00 in 1850. The 1850 census lists every person in Iowa households, their ages and the states where born. Names of men 84 or older are checked in national archives or the records of adjutant generals of the states where they lived in the war years. When a war record is varified, the armed services provides a stone marker, Mrs. Shepherd said, and the DAR, and sometimes others, dedicate the marker with appropriate ceremonies. The graves of many of the veterans probably never will be located. They came into Iowa after 1840 and died before 1850. Mrs. Shepherd hopes to find out about some of these veterans from their descendants. Some of the graves may be second resting places of the veterans. Frequently in the last century, when families moved from one state to another or one county to another, they took the bodies of loved ones along and reburied them near the new homes.
