Included is information about emigration patterns, customs and traditions, important events, medical history, biographical data, etc. January 1, 1850 Obituary In Potawatomie [sic] county, Iowa, on the morning of the 11th of October, 1849, after a lingering illness of six weeks, which he bore with christian fortitude, Mr. DAVID D. YEARSLEY, of an infection of the lungs, aged 41 years, 7 months and 8 days. The subject of this brief memoir was born in Thornbury township, Chester county, Pa., where by his many endearing qualities he had gained a large circle of friends and acquaintance...In the spring of 1843 he emigrated to Hancock, Illinois, where, by a consistent course of life, he had won the respect and esteem of all who knew him, and during the summer of 1846, he and his family emigrated to Potawatomie county, Iowa.... March 26, 1850 Death Notice On February 17, 1850, at Fairfield, Iowa, THOMAS F. JENKINS, aged 32 years, a native of Pennsylvania, and for the last eleven years a resident of New Orleans. May 23, 1854 Death Notice On the 3d inst., at the residence of his son in Bentonsport, Iowa, ISAAC TUSSEY [?], aged 68 years, formerly of Chester county. May 23, 1854 Death Notice In Scott county, Iowa, on the 28th ult., Mr. THOMAS HAMOR, in the 53d year of his age. The deceased left Chester county about the first of April for his new home in the West, in good health and spirits. Shortly after his arrival, he was attacked with a bilious complaint, which at first did not cause any alarm, but which in a few days proved fatal in its character. Mr. Hamor was highly esteemed by his numerous relations and friends in this his native county, who will deeply regret to hear of his sudden and unexpected death. March 4, 1862 Death Notice KILLED AT FORT DONELSON - The Davenport Iowa Gazette, record among the casualties at Fort Donelson, the death of Captain JONATHAN SMITH SLAYMAKER, of that city. Mr. S. has many relatives and friends in Chester county. He was 20 years of age. The Gazette says, his maternal grandfather Jonathan Smith, was long president of the United States Bank at Philadelphia, and Gen. Persifer F. Smith, distinguished in the Mexican war, was his uncle. Among his first occupations, Capt. Slaymaker, was engaged as civil engineer on the Pennsylvania Central R.R., the experience there acquired being of service to him in the positions he so recently filled. Coming to this city in 1856, he remained here, with short intervals, till the breaking out of the war. At the time, he was among the first to volunteer for the war, and was elected by his company first lieutenant, and was with his company mustered into service on the 28th of May.... [CW] June 7, 1862 Death Notice KILLED IN BATTLE - Harrison B. Woodward, a young man, about 20 years of age, son of Elisha Woodward, East Bradford, was killed in a battle near Fort Craig, New Mexico, in February last. He was an enterprising young man, and started west to see the world, going first to Iowa, thence to Pike Peak, and afterwards joined the army. The last letter he wrote, was received in January last, and was answered by his sister. - This week she received a reply to it, but it was written by the Captain of young Woodwardcompany, in which he stated that he was killed in battle, that he fought bravely, and that his loss was deeply felt by the company.
