They resided there until the spring of 1857, when they came to Iowa and settled in Tama township, one-half mile west of Tama. Mrs. Smith was the mother of thirteen children, eight of who survive her-four sons and four daughters. She was left a widow in 1868, since which time she has made her home in Tama until April, 1895, when she went to reside with her daughter at New Sharon, Iowa, where she passed away, Sunday morning, December 1st. Mrs. Smith was life long member of the Methodist church, and lived a consistent and exemplary life. She was held in the highest esteem by all acquaitainces and dearly loved by her intimate friends. She was an especially cheerful person, which pleasing characteristics clung to her in old age. Her remains were brought to Tama and the funeral services held in the Methodist church, Wednesday morning, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Hawn, assisted by Rev. Weaver. The remains were interred in the Toledo cemetery by the side of those of her husband. Many a kindly smile has the writer received from Mrs. Smith; peace to her ashes.
