Obituary of Maria Christine Nelson (Clipping from Family Scrapbook, 
exact date unknown, 1928

Maria Christine Nelson was born in Mercer county, Ill., March 29, 1855 and died 
at her home in Blockton July 6, 1928, aged 73 years, 3 months and 7 days. She 
was united in marriage to William G. Sharp Nov. 10. 1872. To this union 11 
children were born, 3 dying in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Nellie Ledgerwood, 
dying June 23, 1925. She was also preceded by her husband Dec. 30, 1910 and by two
 brothers, August and Albert Nelson, and one sister, Clara Nelson. They moved to 
Iowa in the fall of 1877, located in Taylor county, one mile south of Platteville. 
In the spring of 1881 they bought a farm in Gay township, and there resided until 
the spring of 1909 when they moved to Blockton. Mother Sharp was blessed with 
Christian parents and was dedicated in baptism unto the Lord while an infant, and 
after moving in the Gay Center community she united with the Methodist church and 
was an active worker in the church and Sunday school. The Sharp home was always open 
to the preacher and his family. In the earlier days when the charge was under a 
circuit, the preacher would preach at Gay Center in the morning and frequently go to 
the Sharp home for dinner, preaching at Platteville in the afternnon and Blockton at 
night. Mrs. Sharp had been in failing health for about eight years and after 
suffering with pneumonia last winter left her in a weakened condition and the 
relapse was more than she could stand. She leaves to mourn seven children -- Warren 
F., John Clinton, Claud, Arthur and Mrs. Cora Livingston, of  Blockton; Mrs. Ada 
Brown, of Ideal, S.D., and Mrs. Zelda Thompson, of Moline, Ill., 14 grandchildren, 
one brother, S. L. Nelson of Joy, Ill., and two sisters, Mrs. Amanda Adams, of Rolla, 
Mo., and Mrs. L. H. Kerch of Doran, Minn.Funeral services were held at the Methodist 
church Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. J. H. Bennett, assisted by Rev. 
C. Max Buck, and interment was made in Rose Hill cemetary.
