In addition to his interests in his law and abstract office in Creston, in which he continued his interest for many years, Davenport served a two-year term as Union County’s representative in the twenty-ninth General Assembly of Iowa. A councilman at the time, Davenport was chosen to serve as mayor of Creston to finish the unexpired term of J. C. Ferguson in 1918. An extensive owner of both farm lands and city properties, Davenport bought a substantial interest in the Iowa State Savings bank when John Gibson left Creston and sold his interest to Davenport. A heavy stockholder, Davenport served as president of the Iowa State Savings bank until illness forced his retirement from active business. At one time he was interested in banking institutions at Thayer, Afton and Prescott; for a time serving as president of the bank in Prescott.
