STOCKER, daughter of Ida PARMENTER and Milton PICKERILL) --Lacey MORRISON spent Sunday with his family in Centerville. --Allie SHEA of Des Moines spent Decoration Day with home folk. --Pat MALONEY and wife of Ottumwa spent Decoration Day in Blakesburg. --Miss Opal CALLEN of Moravia was the guest of Mrs. Ernest JOHNSON Sunday. --Mr. and Mrs. Eddie BELLES and son of Lawrence, Kansas, are visiting relatives here. --Miss Effie BOWERMAN departed Tuesday evening for Cedar Falls where she will attend summer school. --Mr. and Mrs. A. A. DONAHOO came out from Ottumwa Tuesday and are spending a few days at their home in Blakesburg. Mrs. Eva MILLER is caring for them. --Mr. and Mrs. Chas. READING will celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniversary next Saturday. There are not many couples who are permitted to spend that many years of married life together, but both Mr. and Mrs. READING are enjoying good health and bid fair to celebrate a goodly number of anniversaries yet. --Carol Eileen, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archie GOODE, died Monday morning only a few hours after birth. A brief funeral service was held at the JAY cemetery Tuesday afternoon. Among them were: Mr. and Mrs. C. M. WALKER, Mrs. WALKER was formerly Dollie UDELL Mr. and Mrs. SMITH (Zay UDELL) Mrs. Roy UDELL and daughter, Marjorie, all from Pasadena. Mr. and Mrs. W. P. ANDERSON, Mrs. Dan ANDERSON, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. MILLER and sons, Mrs. MILLER was Betha ANDERSON,; Mr. and Mrs. M. W. BULLINGTON, BULLINGTON’s used to live in the Arnold and Howk neighborhood. They all live in Long Beach, California. Mr. and Mrs. David CUMMINS and twins, Mr. and Mrs. R. S. WILSON and Mr. and Mrs. S. C. SNOW from Carpenteria, Cal. Mr. and Mrs. B. G. DOROTHY and family of Hemet, Cal. Such a gathering would have been impossible before automobiles as we drove 87 miles and Bert DOROTHY came 89 miles. They voted to make the Iowa picnic and annual affair at Riverside, June 19th. Berth DOROTHY was elected president of the association. S. C. SNOW. PROF. W. E. MOON (Picture) The above is a conterfeit (sic) likeness of Prof. W. E. MOON, who has charge of the singing at the tent meeting. He is a wonderful musical director and has a choir of fifty voices under his direction at the tent. The children will put on the musical program under MOON’s direction at the tent Friday night. Thurs 23 Jun 1927 Suicide Near Ash Grove Saturday Evening Ab POWELLSON, a prominent citizen and farmer residing about three miles east of Ash Grove, became despondent over crop conditions and hanged himself Saturday evening. Mr. POWELLSON was a splendid citizen and was, we are told, in good shape financially and he and his wife had always lived happily, and to account for his death is a great mystery to even his closest friends. The announcement of his death cast a gloom over the entire community, and friends everywhere deeply sympathize with his widow in her hours of sorrow. --Frank ROKEY left Tuesday for Keokuk to attend a re-union of the Spanish American War Veterans Thursday, Friday and Saturday. --Mrs. Grace REEVES and children of Galesburg, Ill., and Mrs. Eva MILLER of Ottumwa have been visiting at the Earl MILLER home east of town. --Mrs. Sarah E. BACHMAN passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Russel HARLAN, 5 miles east of Blakesburg, last Friday. Services were held at the home Monday at 1 o’clock and at Sherman Chapel at 2:30, conducted by Rev. L. H. LANNING of Ottumwa. 23 YEARS AGO TODAY --William Earl BELLES died at the home of his parents June 22, 1904, aged 23 years and 2days. --An infant child of James JOHNS died east of town Friday. Thurs, June 30, 1927 RAVELINGS --Mrs. Henry DAY returned home last week after a two-weeks visit with her husband in Texas. --Vernon SWIFT and Kenneth SWAIM of Denver, Colo., have been guests at the home of Dr. and Mrs. R. J. SELMAN this week. --Mrs. J. W. FLOREA of Springfield, Mo., and Paul FLOREA and family of Des Moines spent Saturday night at the C. L. POST home. --Mrs. Ed HUNT was operated on at an Ottumwa hospital Wednesday morning. She has been suffering of a complication of diseases for some time. --As we go to press word reaches us that Harvey BAIRD, who was operated on for appendicitis, is not doing as well as his physician hoped he would. --Mrs. Freeman WIEDMAN of Moravia is a surgical patient at the Ottumwa hospital and her numerous Blakesburg friends will be glad to learn that she is getting along nicely. --Kenneth CHIDESTER was stricken with acute appendicitis shortly after he had rendered a vocal solo at the M.E. church Sunday evening. He was taken to Ottumwa and operated on at the hospital and his condition is reported very favorable as we go to press. --Those entertained at Mr. and Mrs. Omer EAKIN’s Sunday were: Mr. and Mrs. Clyde VanCLEAVE, Lewis SWAIM, Lee LONG, Ladd MILLER and family, Mrs. Eli SWAIM and daughter, Eva, Lucile and Blanch SWAIM and two sons, Wendall Chas., and Winford, Allen LEFFLER, Marshal HOPKINS and Ernest STUFFLEBEAM. --An auto accident occurred on the Nixson hill east of the Germany school Sunday afternoon, when a car which carried eight people, ran wild backward down the hill. Mrs. James HARL of Pulaski, who was in the car had the skin on her right hand, starting about the wrist, pealed (sic)off to the end of her fingers. She was the only one injured when the car turned over. --Pearl WOOD, Unionville’s wide awake lumber merchant, was a Blakesburg visitor Tuesday. Mr. WOOD is a prince of a good fellow and enjoys the friendship of a large number of people in the vicinity. He has been engaged in the lumber business in Unionville for a great number of years and he is known as a square shooter in all his business transactions. That’s Pearl WOOD six days in the week and on Sunday he goes to church. --Mrs. Malinda MILLER celebrated her eighty-first birthday anniversary at her home in this city last Monday. Mrs. MILLER is hale and hearty for one of her age and enjoys life best when she is out in her garden and caring for her flowers. She is a very agreeable neighbor and a fine old lady. Late in the evening relatives and friends called at the home of Mrs. MILLER to extend congratulations and spend the evening with this pioneer. Home-made ice cream and cake were served and the merry crowd repaired to their homes after wishing Mrs. MILLER many happy returns of the day. --Miss Mabel, daughter of Lewis SWAIM and Clyde VanCLEAVE were married at the home of Miss Pearl KRUMBOLTZ in Ottumwa Saturday afternoon, the Rev. Luther W. CHILDS, pastor of the Finley Avenue Baptist church, reading the ring service. They were attended by Miss Lucille SWAIM and Edward VanCLEAVE. The bride wore a pink georgette gown trimmed in tan and carried a boquet (sic) of roses and sweet peas. Miss SWAIM wore a blue flat crepe gown; her flowers were pink and red roses. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Newt VanCLEAVE and is a splendid young man in every way. The happy couple have many friends here who join with The Excelsior in wishing them much happiness as they travel down life’s narrow pathway. MUNTERVILLE --Rev. and Mrs. Carl SODERBLOOM of Mt. Jewett, Penn., John E. NELSON and wife of Ottumwa, Seth CARLSON and family, Esther and Arthur CARLSON were Sunday guests at the Rev. WIBERG, home. Munterville Church-Curtis WIBERG, pastor, --Sunday evening at 8 o’clock a missionary program will be given under the auspices of the Woman’s Missionary Society. Rev. D. W. VIKER, returned missionary from China, will be the speaker. --Friday at 2:30 the Ladies’ Aid of the Dudley Division will meet at the home of Misses Edith and Emma BERRY. M.E. CHURCH--A.F.
