Although the biography below says "Army Record", the photograph shows a young man in a naval uniform and the biography mentions being on ships. John Terry Mathers Washington, Iowa John Terry Mathers of Washington, was born at Ainsworth, Iowa, January 11, 1897. He was the son of John C. Mathers and Lillie Cates. He was a graduate of Washington High School. Army Record Electrician Mathers, entered the service April 23, 1917, at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. He was sent to the Radio School of Harvard University. After completing the course at the Radio School he was sent on board the U. S. S. Kansas, and later to the steamship Lake City as a wireless operator. On the night of October 3, 1918, the ship was struck in a collision, and sank in a few minutes. Electrician Mathers was drowned when the ship sank.
