This biography was copied from "Washington County in the World War", page 17 Charles M. Polton Wellman, Iowa Charles M. Polton of Wellman, was born at Kinross, Iowa, on July 15, 1895. He was the son of Mart V. Polton and Ellen Gillham. He was a graduate of the Wellman High School. Army Record Corporal Polton entered the service June 4, 1917, at Des Moines, Iowa in Co. B, First Iowa Infantry, from which he was transferred to Co. B, 168th Infantry at Camp Mills, Long Island, N. Y. He landed overseas December 1st, 1917. He was gassed in the Champagne Defensive May 27, 1918, took part in the St. Argonne-Meuse Offensive, where he was killed in action Oct. 11, 1918.
