This biography was copied from "Washington County in the World War", page 15 Claude D. Swisher Washington, Iowa Claude D. Swisher of Washington, was born at Terre Haute, Illinois, on September 23, 1897. He was the son of Oscar M. Swisher and Maude Nickell. Army Record Sergeant Swisher entered the service June 10, 1917, at Fort Madison, Iowa, with Co. K, First Iowa Infantry. He was transferred to Co. K, 168th Infantry, 42nd Division at Camp Mills, Long Island. He landed overseas December 1, 1917, and then trained at Rimecourt, France. He went into the Lorraine Sector, Champagne Defensive, Chateau-Thierry and the St. Mihiel Offensive. He was wounded September 12, 1918, at St. Mihiel, and died September 18 of heart trouble brought on by shock and exposure.
