This biography was copied from "Washington County in the World War", page 17 James H. Thoma Ainsworth, Iowa James H. Thoma of Ainsworth, was born at Ainsworth, Iowa, on July 5, 1896. He was the son of Geo. W. Thoma and Alice Strain. Army Record Private Thoma entered the service May 9, 1917, at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. He was assigned to the 4th Field Artillery and then transferred to Battery F, 15th Field Artillery, Second Division. He landed overseas December 25, 1917, and saw action at Chateau-Thierry, Soissons, St. Mihiel, and Champagne. He was killed by the explosion of his own gun, October 4, 1918, while on the Champagne front.
