This biography was copied from "Washington County in the World War", page 12 Merton Paul Topping Wellman, Iowa Merton Paul Topping of Wellman, was born at Wellman, Iowa, on July 27, 1894. He was the son of Albert O. Topping and Clara Schilling. Army Record Private Merton Topping entered the service at Camp Pike, July 22, 1918. He was assigned to Company 21, Camp Pike Automatic, August Replacement Draft. He embarked for overseas Sept. 16, and while on The way across he was taken ill with influenza and died before the Boat reached Brest. He was buried in the American cemetery at Brest, France.
