This biography was copied from "Washington County in the World War", page 9 Charles Vodicka Kalona, Iowa Charles Vodicka of Kalona, was born in English River Township on February 3, 1897. He was the son of Frank Vodicka and Barbara Belka. Army Record Private Vodicka entered the service Sept. 5, 1918, at Camp Dodge. He was assigned to Co. 48, Battalion 12, 163rd Depot Brigade. He served with this unit until October, when he contracted the Spanish Influenza, which caused his death October 18, 1918. His parents came to America in March, 1869, from Radnice, Plzen County, Bohemia, on a sail ship, and settled in Richmond, Washington County, Iowa, in April, 1869. His father was 17 years if age at that time.
