Gray was born in Ohio, on October 18, 1839, and died at his home in Wellman, Iowa, Feb. 15th, 1918, aged 78 years, 3 months and 27 days. When a boy he came to Iowa with his parents, afterwards returning to Illinois, from which state he enlisted in 1862 in the great war of the Rebellion. He served in 107 Illinois Infantry, 23rd Army Corps, for the remainder of the war, a period of 3 years and 15 days. He was married on Feb. 27th, 1868, to Sarah J. Albin, to which union 9 children were born, Herman and Roy preceding him in death. The children surviving are: Stella, Mrs. Maude Pardun of Keota, Mrs. Opal Hamilton of Wellman, Mrs. Lovel Bitting of Riceville, Iowa, Mrs. Orpha Brumbach of Kinross, Ovid of Wellman, and Harry of Chicago. Besides the children, eight grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Turnipseed, and a brother, Anderson Gray live to mourn his death. By his departure a sorrowing wife is left to meet alone the golden wedding anniversary Feb. 27th, which would have marked 50 years of happy companionship. He had always been a devoted and home loving husband and father and was known to all for his honesty and fair dealing. Honesty was his religion. Additional Comments: He was born in Pickaway Co, OH. He moved to IA with his mother (his father and step-father had both died) and went back to IL to fight with his two older brothers in the war, then went directly back to Washington Co, IA.
