Funeral services will b e held at St. Joseph’s Catholic church, Wednesday morning at ten o’clock. The Columbus Gazette Mar 15 1928 E.W. Kelley Died Early Monday Morn Resided Her For Many Years Honored By Many E.W. Kelley, one of the well known and highly esteemed citizens of this community for many years, died at his home on Main street at 3:20 Monday morning after an illness of less than three weeks. Edward William Kelley was born at Long Island, New York, September 23, 1859 and came at an early age with his parents to Wilton, Iowa. When he grew to manhood he became identified with the creamery business which at that time was one of the flourishing business enterprises fo the country. Practically every community had a flourishing creamery and Mr. Kelley was engaged in this enterprise at Wheatland Center, Fredonia and Cotter. The devolopement of centralized creameries led to the absorption and disbandment of most of these community creameries. Mr. Kelley then turned his attention to the meat business and was engaged in the butcher business in this community for a number o f years. A little over 25 years ago be became identified with the Rock Island Railway company as baggageman a position he filled with great credit until about 7 years ago when ill health compelled him to give up this arduous work and he accepted the position as flagman at the Walnut street crossing where he maintained a close watch at all times and also found opportunity to maintain an intimate contact with the wide circle of friends by whom he was held in the highest esteem. Special mention should be made too of the unusual interest he took in the upkeep of the city railway park. Mr. Kelley enjoyed the respect, the good will and the confidence of a host of friends. He was animated with a spirit of brotherly love and was anxious and willing at all times to lend a helping hand or speak a kindly word. He was united in marriage in 1883 to Miss Effie Trimble who with one daughter, Miss Bertha, survives to mourn his death. He is also survived by three brothers, Thomas and John of Iowa City and Frank of Muscatine and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Mc.???? of Iowa City. Funeral services were held at ten o’clock Wednesday morning at the St. Joseph’s Catholic church of which Mr. Kelley was a devout adherent, conducted by Father Thomann of Nichols, and were largely attended. The floral and mass offerings were a tribute to the esteem in which he was held. Interment was made in the Columbus City cemetery. The pall bearers were: E.P. Shellabarger, G.W. Weber, T.N. O’Neill, J.W. Hubbard, W.A. Carr, J.S. Blair.
