WAS IN HIS 87TH YEAR - Had Lived in Washington 52 Years-The Funeral Tomorrow Afternoon at Two o'Clock. Philip Shrader, one of the pioneers of Washington County, died this morning at a few minutes after 3 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. D. Hesseltine, southeast of the city. Mr. Shrader had been ill but a very short time, and the end came quickly. The cause of his death was general wearing out, together with a complication of kidney and bowel trouble. Mr. Shrader was born in Butler county, Pa., July 16, 1819. He lived there until he was eighteen years of age when, taking all of his possessions wrapped in a handkerchief, he went to Pittsburg where he apprenticed himself to a carpenter for three years. When he had learned his trade he went from Pittsburg to Wheeling, W. Va., from there to St. Louis, back again to Wheeling, and then came west to Rock Island where he worked for a year before coming here. He arrived in Washington 52 years ago and has since lived in this town and vicinity. Mr. Shrader was the early contractor of Washington. He came here about the same time as Norman Everson, and these two men were always closely associated in business affairs. Mr. Shrader built most of the older buildings of this city: the Academy, the Hotel Colenso building, the Masonic Temple, and many others. At that time the carpenter had nothing to work with other than what he made himself, and Mr. Shrader often told of how he had even to make the window sashes for the buildings which he built. Mr. Shrader was married at Alleghany, Pa., August 31, 1846 to Louisa A. Logan. Mrs. Shrader died in October, 1897. Nine children were born to them. Two little girls died in early childhood, one son, Andrew, was killed on the railroad, and John died about four years ago. Those who are living are: Mrs. Lizzie Murphy of Butler Co., Pa, Mrs. Sadie Rawhouser of Columbus City, James S. and Harry Shrader of this city, and Mrs. Ida Hesseltine, at whose home his death occurred. Mr. Shrader was one of a family of twelve children, of whom all are dead except one brother and two sisters. In early years Mr. Shrader was a member of the I.O.O.F. and also of the Presbyterian Church, but since living here, while he was a regular attendent at all the church services, he had never been identified with the local church. The funeral service will be held tomorrow, Sabbath, afternoon at 2 o'clcok at the home of Mrs. W. D. Hesseltine, five miles southeast of the city, conducted by Rev. L. D. Young. The interment will be in the city cemetery.
