Shrader, who died yesterday at his home, 1203 East Fourth Street, came to Washington with his parents when three years old and lived in this community for 81 years. He was one of the real old-timers here. Born at Moundsville, West Virginia, on May 21, 1851, he came to Washington with his parents, Philip and Louisa Logan Shrader, in the spring of 1854, only fifteen years after the town had been laid out and four years before there was a railroad here. His father was a building contractor and built many of the older houses that are now standing in the community. The illness of bronchial pneumonia, combined with the natural weakness of advanced age, which caused his death, was the first sickness that Mr. Shrader ever had, the first time he was ever confined to his bed because of a physical ailment. Mr. Shrader was a farmer and carpenter by occupation and during his later years occupied himself with gardening and producing small fruit. He was married Dec 1, 1873 to Hannah Putman, who survives at the age of 82 years. The children surviving are Mrs. Luella McMullen, Mrs. Ida Miller and Phil Shrader, all of Mt. Pleasant, Jacob of the Havre community, Mrs. Sadie McAvoy and Thomas B. Shrader of Washington. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. W.D. Hesseltine, 16 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Additional Comments: More in the obituary. The obit says his parents were John Philip and Louisa Sharder, but John Philip is incorrect. James's son was John Philip, but Philip Shrader had a brother named John and I have a family record of Philip and his siblings (and parents) and his name is listed as Philip. In all legal records he signed, his name was Philip Shrader.
