A town of some importance in Wayne county, settled in 1871 and incorporated in 1874, contains 1,100 inhabitants, situated on the S. W. div. C.R.I. & P. Ry, 184 miles by rail form Davneport and 62 (air line) south of Des Moines. It has churches, a graded school, a bank-the First National having a capital of $50,000- and 2 weekly newspapers, the Wayne County Republican and Allerton News. It is in the midst of a rich farming country with land selling from $15 to $40 per acre. Shipments are timothy and mullet seeds, grain and live stock. Daily mail and stage to Corydon, fare 50c. Exp.
