Ingalls and his widow China Ingalls: July 19, 1865 CERTIFICATE OF MILITARY DISCHARGE To All Whom it May Concern, Know ye, that James B. Ingalls, a veteran, a Sergeant of Captain William G. Fearing's Company D. 16th Regiment of Iowa Infantry, Vols., who was enrolled on the twenty-fifth day of January one thousand eight hundred and sixty four to serve three years or during the war, is hereby discharged from the service by reason of C.O. order No. 26 of 1865. No objection to his being reenlisted in known to exist. Said Sergeant James B. Ingalls was born in the state of Illinois, is twenty four years of age, five feet seven inches high, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair and by occupation when enlisted, a farmer. (enlisted in January 1862, was discharged in January 1864 and reenlisted in January 1864) This Discharge given near Louisville, this nineteenth day of July 1865. William G. Fearing, Capt. , Co. Vols. ----- July 12, 1890 Application for Pension State of Iowa, Webster County On this 12th day of July, one thousand eight hundred and ninety, personally appeared before a Notary Public in aforesaid county and state, James B. Ingalls, aged 51 years, a resident of the town of Border Plains, county of Webster, state of Iowa, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical James B. Ingalls who was enrolled on the 25th day of January 1862 in Co. D. 16th Regt. Iowa Inft. Vols., in the War of the Rebellion, and served at least ninety days or more and was honorably discharged at Vicksburg, Miss., on the 25th day of January 1864; reenlisted Jan. 1864 and discharged July 19, 1865. That he is totally unable to earn a support by reason of Erysipelas, Rheumatism and disease of heart and eyes. That he never applied for a pension previously; that he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under provision of of the Act of June 27, 1890. Whiteman, Lehigh, Iowa ---- Mar 18, 1891 Physician's Examination and Statement Name of Claimant: James B. Ingalls, Border Plains, Iowa; Co. D. 16th Reg't, Iowa Vols. We have carefully examined the applicant who states that he is suffering from the following disability incurred in the military service, viz: erysipelas, rheumatism, disease of heart and eyes He makes the following statement upon which he bases his claim: Erysipelas began 1/1/2 years since in left arm which has him weak ever since. Rheumatism began on march from Charleston to Washington; treated in camp. Hips, back and legs are painful at times. Heart flutters under any excitement. Eyes are were sore in Andersonville prison. I cannot tell who a man is at five rods distance. On exam: Height: 5 feet, 7 inches; weight: 140 pounds; Age: 51 years; Muscles in lumbar region tender; both elbows tender; Diagnosis: Rheumatism; has cataracts in each eye. If so, please state your wife's full name and her maiden name: Yes, wife's maiden name is Hendrix. China Hendrix. First husband's name was Henry Crawford who served in Co. G 19th Mo. Vols. 2. When were you married? 1885 in Border Plains, by N.G. Roosa. 3. What record of marriage exists? Marriage Certificate 4. Were you previously married: No. 5. Have you any children living? If so please state their names and dates of birth: One girl, 12 years old, adopted. James B. Ingalls, July 4, 1898 ----- January 6, 1910 Declaration for Pension State of Iowa, county of Webster Personally appeared, James B. Ingalls, who being duly sworn, declares that he is 70 years of age and a resident of Lehigh, county of Webster, state of Iowa, and that he is the identical person who was enrolled at Homer, Iowa under the name of James B. Ingalls, on the 25th day of Jan'y 1862; reenilsted on Jan'y 25, 1864 at Vicksburg, Miss. That his personal description at enlistment was as follows: Height 5 feet, 7 inches; complexion dark, color of eyes black, color of hair black; that his occupation was a farmer; that he was born on December 29, 1839 at Hancock County, Illinois. That his several places of residence since leaving the service have been as follows: Have lived at Border Plains and Lehigh, Iowa all the time since discharge except during 1907 and 1908 when I lived in Kit Carson county, Colorado. That he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United states under the provisions of the act of February 6, 1907. State your wife's full name and maiden name: China Ingalls; China Hendrix 3. When and where where you married: 23rd of July 1885 at Border Plains, Webster Co. Iowa by N.G. Roosa, Justice of the Peace. 4. If your present wife was married before her marriage to you, state the name of her former husband, the date of such marriage and the date and place of his death or divorce; state whether he rendered any military service and if so, the name of the organization in which he served: Former husband was Henry Crawford, dead; Marriage 25 Jan. 1865. He died at Buffalo, Mo. in 1883. He reenlisted in Mo. Veteran Volunteers. 5. Are you living with your current wife: Yes. 6. State the name and dates of all your children, living or dead: Haven't had any children. James B. Ingalls, March 22, 1915 ------ June 1917 Preliminary Report to aid my widow if I leave one in getting her pension; Duty of Married Soldiers Soldier's Name: James B. Ingalls Present address: Lehigh, Webster Co. Iowa I was in the service from January 1862 to July 19, 1865 as a Private, Corporal and Sergeant in Co. D. 16th Iowa Inft. and was discharged at Louisville, Ky. on the 19th day of July 1865. Are you a pensioner: Yes I was married to Mrs. China Crawford on July 23, 1885. I was born 29th day of Dec. 1839. She was born 5th day of Nov. 1845. If a prisoner of war, state for how long: 62 days in Andersonville in '64. Remarks: My wife's maiden name is Hendrix. She was the widow of Henry Crawford. James B. Ingalls ------ June 20, 1919 PENSIONER DROPPED FROM ROLLS Soldier: James B. Ingalls Co. D. 16th Iowa Inf'y To the Commissioner of Pensions, I have the honor to report that the name of the above described pensioner who was last paid at $40. on April 4, 1919 had this day been dropped from the roll because of his death April 29, 1919. Very respectfully, Chief, Finance Division ----- June 14, 1919 Declaration for Widow's Pension State of Iowa, Webster County Personally appeared, a soldier's widow, within and for the county and state aforesaid, China Ingalls, who being duly sworn, declares that she is 73 years of age and that she as born November 5, 1845 in Jasper, Tennessee. That she is the widow of James B. Ingalls, who enlisted Jan. 25, 1862 as a corporal in Co. D. 16th Regt. Iowa Infantry and was honorably discharged July 19, 1865, having served 90 days or more during the Civil War. That she was married to said soldier on July 23, 1885 under the name of China Crawford at Border Plains, Webster county, Iowa by N.G Roosa, J.P.; that the soldier had not previously been married. The widow had been married to Henry Crawford who died Jan. 30, 1883. Crawford had been int he state militia; belonged to the veteran volunteers. That said soldier James B. Ingalls died April 29, 1919 at Lehigh, Iowa and that she has not married since his death. He left no children under sixteen years of age. That she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the Act of April 19, 1908 as amended by the Act of Sept. 8, 1916. Signed, China Ingalls Witnesses: Morral Michael, Nina Hyde, Ft. Dodge, Iowa ---- July 21, 1919 In the claim of China Ingalls, widow of James B. Ingalls, late of Co. D. 16th Iowa Inf. On this 21st day of July 1919, personally appeared, China Ingalls, a resident of Lehigh in the county of Webster, state of Iowa, who being duly sworn, declares as follows: That my former husband Henry Crawford first enlisted in the military service of the Unitd States March 1, 1862 in Co. C. 8th Reg. Missouri Cav.; that he was discharged from this service on the 13th day of March 1864 and reenlisted on the same date in Co. G. 13th Regt. Missouri Cavalry; he was appointed a corporal on the 4th day of August 1865 and held this office when discharged from the service on January 11, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. That he never applied for a pension from the United States on account of this sesrvice and that I have never before applied for a pension. That I have no son living and never had a son in the military service of the United States. Signed, China Ingalls ----- Included in the pension file is a copy of a paper dated Feb. 9, 1883 from Buffalo Lodge No. 430, I.O.O.F., Dallas County, Missouri which states: This is to certify that Henry Crawford of Vesper Lodge No. 305, Webster County, Iowa, died Jan. 31st 1883 in Dallas County, Missouri and was buried by this Lodge on Feb. 7, 1883. John S. Wilson, W.G. Robertson. ---- August 1, 1919 State of Iowa, County of Webster I, N.S. Scoviel, being a resident of the town of Duncombe, county of Webster, state of Iowa, being of the age of 70 years, and having known China Ingalls for a period of 43 years, personally and first becoming acquainted with her during the year 1876, and having kept that acquaintance for the years past, do hereby make the following affidavit, having been duly sworn: That I know that James B. Ingalls, the deceased, was never previously married to the time of his marriage to China Ingalls, (the former wife of Henry Crawford, deceased) and that I knew him personally from the time that he became of marriagable age and that the deceased and China Ingalls lived together as husband and wife from the time of their marriage until his death, and they never were divorced. Scoviel, this 1st day of August 1919. ----- August 12, 1919 State of Iowa, county of Hamilton I, Alice Johnson, being a resident of the town of Webster City and county of Hamilton, state of Iowa, and of the age of 59 years, and having known China Ingalls for a period of 48 years, personally and first becoming acquainted with her during the year 1871 and having kept that acquaintance for the years past, do hereby make the following affidavit, having been duly sworn: That I knew China Ingalls, formerly China Crawford, former wife of Henry Crawford, deceased, and that James B. Ingalls the deceased was never married previous to the time of the marriage to China Ingalls, and that I knew personally from the time that he became of marriagable age; and that the deceased and China Ingalls lived together as husband and wife from the time of their marriage until the time of his death. Ingalls Cause of Death: Cancer of Bladder Place of Burial: Border Plains, Lehigh, Iowa Undertaker: A.M. DuBois, Lehigh, Iowa ------- OBITUARY (newspaper not named or dated) JAMES B. INGALLS PASSES AWAY AFTER MANY WEEKS OF INTENSE SUFFERING Member Co. D. 16th IA Infantry James B. Ingalls, a civil war veteran and a well known and highly respected citizen of Lehigh, passed away Tuesday evening about four o'clock, after an extended sickess of kidney and other complications, he suffering severely during the past few weeks and death came as a relief. James Brown Ingalls was born in Illinois in 1839 and when a small boy left that state with his parents and came to Iowa, where they located in Jefferson county. They made their home there for some time and prior to the civil war Mr. Ingalls came to Webster county. In 1861 he heard the call of his county and volunteered, enlisting in Company D, 16th Regiment, Iowa Infantry, and he served throughout the war, being in service a little over four years. At the close of the war he returned to this place and has made his home here since. July 5, 1885, he was united in marriage to Mrs. China Crawford. Several years ago he was converted and joined the Christian church, of which church he was a faithful member until his death. Besides a sorrowing wife he leaves one daughter Mrs. George Drain of this place; one brother, T.B. Ingalls of Fort Dodge; and one sister Mrs. Wilson of Dayton, Oregon, besides a large number of neighbors and friends who mourn with the relatives the loss of this good man. Mr. Ingalls was a good citizen, quiet and unassuming, and always to be found on the side of right. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the United Brethren church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Mille and the interment will occur in the family burial lot in the Border Plains Cemetery.
